Allegations of Research Misconduct
A Fair, Confidential, and Transparent Approach to Research Integrity
SCIENTIA: Journal of Multi-Disciplinary Science, published by PT Sangadji Media Publishing, is committed to maintaining research integrity and upholding high standards of publication ethics. The journal takes all allegations of research misconduct seriously and addresses concerns fairly, objectively, and responsibly while protecting the integrity of the scholarly record.
This policy establishes the principles and procedures for reporting, assessing, investigating, and responding to suspected research misconduct involving manuscripts submitted to or articles published in SCIENTIA. All allegations are evaluated on the basis of available evidence, with due consideration for fairness, confidentiality, procedural integrity, and the rights of all parties involved. An allegation alone does not establish that misconduct has occurred.
1. Scope of Research Misconduct
Research misconduct may take various forms, including but not limited to the following:
Plagiarism
Using another person's words, ideas, data, images, or other intellectual contributions without appropriate acknowledgment or attribution.
Data Fabrication
Inventing data, research results, participants, experiments, or research activities that did not actually occur.
Data Falsification
Manipulating research materials, methods, data, images, or results, or omitting relevant information, in ways that inaccurately represent the research record.
Duplicate or Redundant Publication
Publishing substantially overlapping work without appropriate disclosure, justification, or compliance with the journal's publication requirements.
Inappropriate Authorship
Misrepresenting scholarly contributions through gift, guest, or ghost authorship, or improperly excluding individuals who meet the journal's authorship criteria.
Undisclosed Conflicts of Interest
Failing to disclose relevant financial, professional, personal, or institutional interests that could improperly influence the research, its interpretation, or the publication process.
Other Ethical Violations
Other serious breaches of applicable research ethics, including violations involving informed consent, research participants, animal welfare, data confidentiality, ethical approvals, or the journal's publication policies.
2. Reporting Procedure
2.1. Submitting a Concern
Anyone who suspects research misconduct involving a manuscript submitted to or an article published in SCIENTIA may report the concern to the journal's editorial office through the official contact details provided on the journal's website.
To facilitate a responsible assessment, reports should include the following information where available:
- The title of the manuscript or published article and its DOI or URL, if available.
- A clear description of the suspected misconduct and the specific issues of concern.
- Supporting evidence, such as source comparisons, relevant documents, data inconsistencies, or other verifiable information.
- Any additional information that may assist the editorial team in evaluating the allegation.
2.2. Initial Editorial Assessment
Upon receiving a report, the editorial team will assess whether the allegation is sufficiently specific and supported by information that warrants further examination. Where appropriate, receipt of the report will be acknowledged. The initial assessment may involve examining the manuscript, publication records, similarity reports, research materials, relevant correspondence, and other available evidence.
If a report lacks sufficient detail, the journal may request clarification or additional supporting information. The journal may decide not to proceed when an allegation is unsupported or falls outside its remit. No conclusion of misconduct will be drawn solely from the submission of an allegation.
3. Investigation and Author Response
When further examination is warranted, SCIENTIA may take one or more of the following steps, depending on the nature, seriousness, and circumstances of the allegation:
Request for Clarification
Request explanations, original data, research records, ethical approval documentation, or other relevant supporting materials from the authors.
Opportunity to Respond
Provide the individuals directly concerned with a reasonable opportunity to respond to the allegations and relevant evidence before an editorial determination is made, where appropriate.
Consultation with Experts
Consult independent experts, peer reviewers, editorial advisers, research ethics specialists, or other qualified individuals when specialist assessment is necessary.
Institutional Referral
Refer the matter to the relevant institution, research organization, funder, or other appropriate authority when a formal investigation beyond the journal's remit is necessary.
Evidence-Based Determination
Evaluate the available evidence, explanations, and responses impartially before deciding on an appropriate editorial action.
4. Principles Governing Investigations
Fairness and Objectivity
All allegations are assessed impartially on the available evidence. No individual will be presumed responsible for misconduct before the relevant facts have been examined.
Confidentiality
Information concerning allegations and investigations will be handled confidentially to the extent possible, subject to the needs of a fair investigation, relevant disclosure obligations, and applicable legal or institutional requirements.
Right to Respond
Individuals directly concerned will be given a reasonable opportunity to provide explanations or relevant evidence when appropriate to the nature of the case.
Proportionate Action
Editorial responses will be proportionate to the seriousness of the concern, the strength of the evidence, the explanations provided, and the implications for the reliability of the scholarly record.
5. Possible Editorial Actions
Depending on the findings, the stage of publication, and the seriousness of the concern, the journal may take one or more of the following actions:
- Manuscript Rejection: Reject a submitted manuscript when serious ethical concerns are substantiated or the manuscript fails to meet the journal's publication requirements.
- Correction: Publish a correction when an identified error can be adequately addressed without retracting the article.
- Expression of Concern: Publish an expression of concern when substantial questions remain unresolved and readers need to be informed while further investigation is pending.
- Retraction: Retract a published article when the evidence and applicable editorial policies justify retraction to protect the integrity of the scholarly record.
- Other Appropriate Measures: Take additional action when warranted, including contacting relevant institutions or authorities, correcting publication metadata, or documenting the outcome of an investigation as appropriate.
6. Protecting the Scholarly Record
SCIENTIA is committed to preserving the accuracy, reliability, and transparency of the scholarly record. When editorial action is necessary, the journal will communicate relevant decisions through appropriate notices linked to the affected article, where applicable.
Public notices will provide sufficient information to explain the editorial action while respecting confidentiality, applicable legal obligations, and the rights of the parties involved. The journal may update the publication record when new evidence or subsequent developments warrant further action.
Commitment to Research Integrity
SCIENTIA: Journal of Multi-Disciplinary Science is committed to handling allegations of research misconduct responsibly, consistently, and in accordance with recognized principles of publication ethics. The journal seeks to protect authors, readers, reviewers, and the wider research community by ensuring that concerns are examined carefully and that appropriate action is taken when supported by evidence.
